“Scareware”- Deceiving FAKE Anti-viruses
Scareware is deception software. It is also known as “rogue scanner” software or “fraudware.” the purpose of which is to frighten people into purchasing and installing it.
Scareware generates pop-ups that resemble Windows(and even Mac) system messages, usually pretends to be antivirus or antispyware software, a firewall application, or a registry cleaner. The messages typically say that a large number of problems, such as infected files, have been found on the computer and the user is prompted to purchase software to fix the problems (usually $50-$80). In reality, no problems were detected and the suggested software purchase may actually contain real malware.
Scareware applications usually include other forms of infections such as: malware, spyware, adware, trojans, and key loggers; all of which can compromise the security and integrity of data on a system. If you believe you have been infected with a rogue anti-virus, contact us immediately for details.
